Welcome, somehow you've surfed to my personal website on bonsai.
Here in the Great State of Texas we have a great place to grow bonsai. Several Texas natives make great material- Texas Ebony, Persimmon, Yaupon, Live Oak, Bald Cypress, and Ash Junipers to name a few.
Our climate makes it possible to grow a number of sub tropical species, and with minimal effort, tropicals. We are blessed with a long growing season which allows us to get twice and sometimes three times the amount of work done per year that the "yankees" do. So much for us "slow" Southerners!
Downside is it's HOT! My first hard-learned lesson: whoever wrote "keep your trees in full sun" was not a Texan. Also, when it does rain, it tends to come torrentially. Added to this, in my particular location, I am a few short blocks from the ocean- adding salt and constant drying winds. And did I mention it's HOT?
There are enthusiasts all over the state. You can find a club present in most of the major population centers. Austin/San Antonio has the best "scene' by far with several great nurseries. The Texas clubs pool their resources under the banner of the Lone Star Bonsai Federation. Guest speaker tours and an annual conference are the main benefits of this alliance.
This year the conference is in Dallas…

I just got to spend a day working with Gary Marchal, and the Lake Charles Club on some bald cypress. It was a great time!
Check out Gary's new site as it develops!

Check back as I'm always adding a picture or anecdote, almost weekly.
