In the last days of summer, when the lengthening shadows bring the coolness of night, driving the cold blooded creatures from the comfort of their warming stones into hiding, the bonsai artist began his quest to elevate the common-place to new heights.
A long motor carriage journey brought him to a neglected marketplace for plants where, teeming with life in the spring, once the burst of springtime flowers had faded and the furnace of summer passed, only a few dedicated souls now ventured in search of material.
Hours were spent crawling amidst rows of wares, seeking a tree with a spirit that spoke to him. At last he wandered into the grassy fringes where forgotten neglected reject hid among the grass scrabbling for the basic necessities of life.
Suddenly a form reared in front of him from the grass. Snake! Screamed his mind. But no, just the makings of this odd little tree "The Cobra"…
This tree is a staked juniperus procumbens to creat a spiraling flowing mound. At some point during that process the stake must have broken and the tree was tossed to the edges of the nursery rows. This softened the action some, although some of the lower curves remain.
Immediately the tree was topped to the first two significant branches. It seemed to remind me of a ceramic cobra I once had, coiled and ready to strike. The characteristics to synthesize presented by this tree was the thin trunk and the extreme coiling
